House of Culture

Not discriminating between Russian kitsch and high culture and showing it all from popsa to Russian lit.

I like banana's!: So, since I'm going to Russia this september, does anyone have advice about traveling to that area?

imannoymous:

AKA, clothing, eating advice, customs, places to visit, anything would be great! I’ll be living with a host family, so this might be difficult being a vegan. I might have to eat eggs and milk occasionally, I will try my best not to. But I speak no Russian, I will try to learn some, but I can’t…

Try to learn the basics yes/no, directions, how to order food, greetings the quick and dirty which you can by buying books specifically for it. Learn Russian 10 minutes a day is very helpful, basic and easy for beginners. Also try to buy a book on street customs and slang aka informal things. You will learn more Russian being there but learning the basis your homestay family will help you the most with language.

Customs wise never refuse your guests i know you are vegan but its only customary and polite. You might have to break your vegan diet but i know Russians who are vegan in the urban areas but if your are going to a rural part it might not be.
